Season Complete
Whoever we play in Game 1 of the 2012 season! |
The Wolverines had a divisional title on the line going into this one against a tough Edmonton Seahawks team, and the game proved to be everything that one could have hoped for. The contest was hard-fought and the lead changed several times. And at the end of it all, the Wolverines managed the first undefeated season in Club history, with 6 wins and a tie in the 7 games played.
Neither defense yielded any points in the first quarter, and it looked like it might be a low-scoring affair. To be sure, the Wolverines were moving the ball on a couple of drives, but some untimely fumbles kept them off the scoresheet. This would cost them, and early in the second the Seahawks struck and took an 8-0 lead. Jeremy Kerr responded on the next series with the first Wolverine major of the game to make it 8-6, capping a drive that had seen him make several big runs to set up the field position for his final 1-yard plunge. The Seahawks forced a safety near the end of the quarter and took a 10-6 lead to the dressing room.
In the second half, the Seahawks were able to extend their lead to 18-6 before Alex Wilander managed a couple big runs to help drive the team to the one-yard line, where Wilander put the ball across to make the score 18-13. Then, after the defense forced a Seahawk fumble, the prettiest play of the night - a double-reverse option play seeing Cameron Maschmeyer toss a 33-yard strike to D'arcy McGee - connected for a big six, and gave the Wolverines their first lead of the game, 20-18.
But the Seahawks were not done. Their first drive of the fourth quarter resulted in a touchdown to make it 24-20 and they held that lead until late in the game. The Wolverines were struggling to make some headway with time running down, when a critical mistake cost the Seahawks big; a 25-yard penalty as a result of a disqualification put the Wolverines inside the 25-yard line with 55 seconds left. They did not squander the opportunity. Three plays later Kerr scored his second touchdown from the 2-yard line, and the game ended 27-24 as the Seahawks ran out of time.
The Wolverine defense has been the story all season long; but the Seahawks are noted for a good passing attack, and the defense was challenged this day. But on this occasion, the offense took over and scored when they had to, showing some real intestinal fortitude when the chips were down and the game was on the line. It was truly a team win and one of the most entertaining games that Wolverine fans have seen in a long, long time. Over the past few games the offense has been getting into their stride, and this was indeed their best game of the season.
So that's the 2011 Midget season, and will go down as one of the great seasons in Wolverine history.
